What is your name and your profession?
I am Gaël FREDERIC, I am from Guadeloupe, a French caribbean island. I live in Paris and I graduated from climate control engineering.
How long have you been growing out your dreadlocks?
I have been growing my dreadlocks for about 4 years, and I am my own loctician.
What is your regimen for your dreadlocks? Products , upkeep, ect
I remove the dust from my dreadlocks every three months with soft soap and refresh them about twice a month with my natural handmade cream made with black castor oil and shea butter. I only use natural products in my hair such as jojoba oil and almond oil, and I shampoo my hair with a natural aloe vera shampoo.
What is your favorite style for your dreadlocks?
I generally tie them, or keep my hair free.
Have your dreadlocks ever hindered you professionally?
The job I do is physical and not about appearance, so they don’t mind my hairstyle, They just want my job to be done.
How do you feel about the natural hair movement taking place amongst African American women?
I think it is a great movement, because I think that people have to accept who they are, how they were born. I’m not against relaxers, weaves and wigs, but I prefer to see women who embrace their natural hair. They can do so many hairstyles and I really like that. My sister has natural hair and I always enjoy to seeing her with different hairstyles. My brother too has natural hair and embraces his afro.
Any advice to someone just starting out on their journey
Patience is the key if you want pretty dreadlocks and also don’t refresh them too often. Once a month is enough.
