What is your name and your profession?
Sage Edgerson, Fashion Student at SUBR
Why did you go natural?
I initially wanted to go natural my junior year of high school but didn’t know how to transition properly so I was forced to get a perm. When I got to college I wanted a change. By then I had detached myself from my hair and it’s length and was ready. I’m sort of a risk taker and love to try new things so going natural was a no brainer for me. I’ve seen many celebs cut their hair (the starting of the natural hair movement) and it motivated me even more to do it because of the freeness of the look.
How long have you been natural and when did you BC?
I’ve been natural almost 4 and a half years, I big chopped on New Year’s Eve of 2010
My staple hair style is a wash and go or now it’s become a wash and blow dry because of how much hair I have. I mostly wear my hair in a fro because I haven’t mastered any other styles that work for my hair.
What are your natural hair goals?
My goal is to grow my hair as long as it can get. Sooner or later I’ll probably be locking up when I’m ready to do something else with my hair.
How do you keep your hair intact overnight?
I wish I could keep my hair intact overnight. Mostly I put my hair in a puff or sometimes leave it as is in a fro but I’d really like to invest in an extra large hair bonnet.
How do you maintain length?
I believe in a strict weekly regiment (deep conditions, detangle) and little to no heat (with the exception of a blow dryer with a diffuser on warm then doing a cool blast). I wet my hair with cold water each time I do a wash & go. Protective styles have helped also. Plus lots of water and trying to eat well!
Name 1 reason you went natural and why you love being natural.
I went natural because I wanted a change. I love being natural because it allowed me to see the real beauty & fierceness in myself. Going natural pretty much changed my outlook on things.
