How did you do it?
Instead of rambling on about my story, I thought I would share my top 5 tips about how I got healthy.
1. Baby Steps
For me, my healthy changes have come in baby steps. For example :
- Cutting out red meat and switching to turkey
- Cutting out fried food and soda
- Eating more veggies on a daily basis
- Switching from 2 big meals a day to 5 small ones (well, most of the time)
- Starting with beginners yoga and moving to spin class at the gym
The list goes on, but for me baby steps work the best because if I cut something out cold turkey, it doesn’t work. Some people are great at that. I’m not and I’ve had to learn that the hard way. It’s critical to find a process that works for you to cut out bad habits and add good ones.
2. Fit Friends I’ve surrounded myself with fit friends!

These girls take their health and fitness seriously and we talk about what races we’re doing, what we’re eating, the newest fitness craze or whatever all of the time. Having a fit friends support group is essential! You are more likely to succeed when you have a workout buddy or someone to hold you accountable.
3. Focus on a Feeling
To get really serious about my health, I had to change the way I thought about food and exercise. I try not to focus on what I choose not to eat and focus on how I feel after I eat something healthy. I love feeling full, but light. Compared to the typical ‘I’m so full I can’t roll over’ feeling. I no longer associate that feeling with being satisfied. If I feel like that, I ate the wrong thing. I also don’t really like to workout so instead of focusing on dreading my workouts I focus on how I will feel when I’m done. I feel accomplished and full of energy! It’s great.
4. Set Goals and Push Your Limits
One thing I like about participating in races is the feeling of pushing myself to the max and achieving a goal I never thought I would. It’s an amazing feeling of accomplishment to cross the finish line at a triathlon or a half marathon, knowing you put in all of the hard work to reach your goals.
I’ve transformed my life in a positive way and it has had such an impact on me that I want to share it with everyone else! I love talking to other people about how to get healthy, what to eat, my favorite healthy recipes, how to overcome their nutrition and fitness obstacles, etc. Find something about your healthy journey to get passionate about whether that’s a specific workout, motivating others or whatever. Your passion will help you stay on track.
Educate yourself about the journey you’re about to embark on. You can’t do this half way or you will fail. Sorry. To live a truly healthy, active lifestyle means you have to go all in. Watch documentaries, read books, check out health and fitness blogs. Learn as much as you can about living healthy so you can find the magic combination of things that work for you!
