Moptop Maven Controversy

As an avid former reader of The Moptop Maven’s (MTM) blog, I’ve been following the controversy surrounding her this year pretty closely. I started following her blog in early 2010 right after I BC’d. I didn’t know anything about bloggers or scammers, etc. so I took her blog at face value. She had great information about hair, product recipes, product reviews, food recipes, fashion, natural skin care solutions, blog posts about inspiration and self-enlightenment, and she seemed so freakin’ genuine. I never thought in a million years that she would be accused of scamming anyone.

The one thing I did find EXTREMELY odd was that in all of the personal information that she divulged about her life  she never once mentioned a job. Yet, she had all of these fabulous clothes, money to buy hair product ingredients, support her daughter, eat at nice restaurants and be on the scene in LA. I just thought that maybe she had a sugar daddy or something and I left it alone since, after all, it’s none of my business.

Then in January 2011 she disappeared off of the face of the earth. Honestly, I was worried about her.  Even though I didn’t know her, I felt  like I had gotten to know her through her blog posts (corney, I know, but that’s how much I loved her blog).  Then I started reading the negative comments about her jewelry store, Frank and Myrrh.  People mentioned how orders were never filled after they paid her money and they couldn’t get in touch with her. Next, the post about her being sick surfaced and that really invoked my sympathy. I thought to myself… this poor girl is struggling to be healthy and people are bashing her for not filling a $40 order?! They need to give her some time. Now that some time has passed, I’ve found some fishy information about MTM through some internet and forum searching.  According to DivaDee62 on BGLH forum MTM is a serial scammer. DivaDe62 alleges the following:

2009-2010?  Nikole (aka the Moptop Maven) starts Ebay Soap Supply Business. Allegedly Scams some folks, fakes death to get out of refunding money and/or sending product.

2009-2010? Nikole starts Etsy Vintage Clothing Store which abruptly closes.

2009-2010? Nikole starts Frank & Myrrh Blog/Jewelry store. Takes orders, Allegedly scams some folks and disappears.

2010? Nikole reappears as The Mop Top Maven blog. Amasses a large following, “opens” Frank & Myrrh Jewelry Store. Nov/Dec 2010 has blow out sale, scams some folks…counts reach possibly 200-250 orders not fulfilled or refunded. She disappears.

Feb 2011 Reappears online only to tell folks she is oh so sick… “Mom and Grandma” post on various blogs co-signing the daughter’s illness. No refunds. No products.

June 2011 People on various messageboards report seeing MTM out and about in L.A. living life and looking good.

June 2011 Enso Naturals Appears. Founder “Dee Cole” aka Nikole Denise Crowe is face camera shy but not too shy to post pics of her hands under another pseudonym to give store Rave Reviews.

September 2011 to INFINITY: Fools still gonna give this nutbag their money despite mounds and mounds of proof that Nikole D. Crowe is a low-rent half a#$ Grifter; a Thousandnaire living in Hollyweird trying desperately to keep up with Claudia Jordan and her crew of delusional gold diggers.

Then to add insult to injury, I happened to see a tweet mentioning that MTM was in Nelly’s Hot in Here video, which in and of itself isn’t really a big deal, but she seemed to live by the mantra of self-enlightenment, inspiring others, etc. and there she was dancing around like a video ho?? I was baffled. There are a lot of other rumors going around as well, but I’m just going to stick to the ones that concern her blog and her allegedly scammed customers.

Here is the bottom line, no one except those who know her personally know exactly what’s going on. Period. People can speculate all day. She could be a scammer or it could genuinely be a big misunderstanding. If she is in fact a scammer, that’s really unfortunate and I hope it doesn’t have negative repercussions for all of the other natural hair bloggers and online stores embraced by the natural hair community that are honest, genuine and care about their followers, subscribers and customers. If MTM is up to no good then God will take care of that…It’s not our place to try and right her alleged wrongs.  All people can do is drop it and move on. That’s just my two cents…

I have to say that Alexandria pretty much said everything i feel about this situtation. I mean, I never bought anything from her and i was a big fan but the evidence being mounted against her is becoming too much to ignore. For example, the fact that she said she was not the owner of Enso Naturals… and then THIS document surfaces, found by the women on LHCF that is basically the smoking gun saying she is.

So what exactly is a Fictitious Business Name Statement?

To answer this question, it is important to understand what a fictitious name is and how it is used. Simply put, a fictitious business name is one that does not use the business owner’s name. Corporations are generally exempt, as are businesses that use the individual proprietor’s own name. If you are doing business as (d/b/a), John Doe or Widgets Incorporated, then you don’t need a fictitious name. However, American Widget Partnership run by John Doe will need to comply with fictitious business name rules.

Filing a Fictitious Business Name Statement

Complying with these rules includes filing a fictitious business name statement. This filing is required by law in order to connect the name of a business to the business owner. This protects consumers because it allows them to get information about the owner of a company if they have consumer problems or need to file a lawsuit. Depending on your state law, most businesses that operate under a fictitious name are required to complete a fictitious business name statement, publish the statement in a newspaper of general circulation, and then record this information with the county recorder where the business is located.

Filing is also required to open a business checking bank account in the name of the business. Banks will generally not open a business account without your filed copy of your DBA registration certificate. Note that some banks may also ask you for your business license.

For the business owner, it allows the person to set up a single entity to operate multiple businesses without creating a new entity for each or undergoing the expense of forming a corporation. For example, you can sell your widgets in a brick and mortar location and have a sales website using the same fictitious name.

No i was not the one to dig up any of this information. Various women from various forums did this and i make no claim that i have. Do i think she’s guilty? That’s not for me to say BUT what i can say is i sincerly hope(d) she wasnt because i am a fan of her’s and a lover of her hair. I just hope that there is a really big and GOOD explination for this mess.

If your going to buy from someone online tho, now there history and do your research.

  1. I too followed her blog and read the post about her being sick and whatnot..was concerned about her. Then recently heard all of these allegations about her. I have no heaven or hell to put her in but what goes around comes around Karma is a mother “fa yo azz” and while I wish no ill on anyone, she will in due time get what’s coming to her 10 fold if she indeed did what people are accusing her of.

    1. I loved her blog and her hair. I always hoped she’d resurface. Glad to know the whole thing was just a set up for a scam. That’s why although I enjoy the internet, I don’t allow myself to become attached to these people. On her blog she once said that she used to be shallow and roll with people based on status, apparently that part may or may not have changed. Ultimately she’s not to be trusted and while her hair is beautiful, there’s lots of other black natural bloggers with hair to drool over. On to the next.

  2. I am so disappointed by this!!! I read through that entire NC thread this weekend and like many I laughed, I gasped in shock, and I shook my head over the incredible evidence that has been coming to light. What’s funny was I was planning on purchasing some items from her shop last year, but my own sickness (I was hospitalized with pneumonia) prevented me from placing an order!!!

it was too many threads for me to completely get through.. lol

  3. I didn’t realize all of this was going on. Wooooow is all I can say as I shake my head.

    1. Elizabeth says:

I know.. She seemed so genuine

  4. Wow, she was one of my hair idols that inspired me to transition to natural last year. I too saw the message about being sick on her blog, and keep thinking she must really be sick cause she still hadn’t had any new blog posts. I even checked her Twitter last week and saw a post “doing better…need to get my weight up tho! Haven’t been this skinny since high school! Lolll” and “I am going to blog soon 🙂 working out a schedule so I don’t over exert myself…but I will be back!” so I truly thought she was sick. Wow, the fact definitely shed another light. Thanks for posting this!

  5. wow, I had no idea, she featured me on her blog and I even have ad space up there..I hope she can clear this up, scamming your own people…wow..and she didnt have too, hope its not true

  6. WOw is really all u can say I hope she isnt scamming people because I was a big fan. As far as her blog she always seemed a bit reserved about some info. I truly thought she was sick.

  7. I felt the same way as you as far as genuinely caring about her health because I love her blog. I also noticed the no job mentioning thing. And although I never brought any of her jewelry, if the stories are true, I think its a terrible business practice. Someone should have contacted each and every customer that didn’t receive their products, with the same speediness that they were able to take the money out of their bank accounts. All customers should get together and file suit everyone make a complaint to the BBB. I have always had great results when I complained to the BBB.

  8. Wow, some of you have too much time on your hands and a few loose screws.

    1. He thought she mentioned being a freelance jewelry designer, but even if she didn’t she never owed you the right of knowing her occupation.

    2. If these morons would have taken the time to read her blog, they’d know she told them to go through PayPal to get your refund, which is something I know from experience can be done with or without her permission. You snooze, you loose.

3.So she was in a music video back in 2002? Are you serious, those sticks you all have up your colons must get uncomfortable at times. Half of you probably shake your cellulite at clubs for free. I looked at the video and laughed so hard, she had like three seconds and wasn’t even shaking anything.

    4. She was seen out and about? How trustworthy are these people’s eyes? Did they know 100% it was her? Even if it was, she’s not suppose to be ‘out and about, looking happy’ ?

I don’t blame her for not wanting to come back to Youtube or MTM, with as many nuts online as there are.

    1. I don’t think the fact that “shes out and about and looking happy” is the problem…the problem is the way she explained her sickness to her followers made it seem like she was too weak to do ANYTHING and that her mother had to take care of her. So if shes out here so called doing well and feeling better and opened up a website why not address you’re followers that were genuinely concerned for her well being. I’m sure if you got scammed you feel a little nuts too.

    2. He that is without sin should cast the first stone.

People, calm down and wait a second. How do you know that all of these is true? People can be so mean and judgemental, it is such a shame!

I, myself, do not know the details of what went on with her Jewelry store, but the girl said she was sick. She may just have lost control of her business due to her illness. I heard that people could have gotten their refund via paypal so, why didn’t they?

I absolutely do not blame her for disappearing from the vlogging/blogging world, I would too, if I was treated the same way.

People make up stories and stories change as they get heard by people. It happens everywhere. I am a victim of it. So, please be gracious. Even if she is guilty of some of these accusations, pray for her

    1. Thank you for this information. I was wondering what happened, and well now I know. It’s really something when you think you know someone and they turn out to be disingenuous. The only people suffering in this situation is Nicole. Her reputation is trashed now. No one will ever trust her again!

  9. Queen Eye Cee says:

Hell Yeah the Bitch is guilty and owes me money; I placed an order in September for some Herbal Healing Tea (39.95) and have yet to receive a refund nor my products!!!

  10. Jaznellow says:

Oh man, thank you for posting this. I too was an avid reader and was under the inpression that she was sick or pissibly even dead. That’s so messes up if she did what was alleged. There’s no excuse. She was gaining a pretty big following too. Sad… I really liked her blog.

  11. MissEbony2u says:

Why the hell is her website still up? That’s what I want to know!

  12. jealousy perhaps? says:

this could be legit or it could be a misunderstanding, but it frightens me to think that people might stalk a youtuber and harass her bec/ the web goes buzz about this potential crook, notice that I used the word potential, just know that posting allegations like this can get you sued for defamation, which is taken very seriously, especially if she is harmed, this website could be the one at a loss, but thanks for the heads up…

  13. Wow remember ladies, only rumours and nothing proven and that document could have surfaced from anywhere and could have been fake! Confront the lady herself and ask her for her side of the story before spreading unfounded rumours on the internet. It may be true but then again it may not be!

    1. One Girl, 5,00 curls says:

      They tried. She never replied.

  14. Mary from Md says:

I found this thread trying to get the 411 on MopTop. With her being MIA for so long, I was sort of bracing for the worst. Actually, I’m relieved to her she’s an “alleged” scammer rather than dead. She never took anything from me or from anyone I know. So, I’m going to give her the benefit of the doubt. But, I don’t think I’ll make any orders just yet.

Nevertheless, where there’s life there’s hope. I hope this isn’t true and if its is, I hope she and her victims get lots of help. Peace to one and all.

  15. Whoah hello I jus researched wilson disease…its diagnosed at age 4 -_- how some1 could ignore\suddenly appear with those symptoms at a latter age baffles me….smh chile lawd haf murcy

  16. Sooo disappointing! I used to love her blog too! I had no idea this was going on

  17. I literally teared up as I read this! I found this googling her blog to see if it had reopened (even after all of this time). I am soooooo disappointed! I would have never seen this coming!

    1. Oh! and I watched the video and found her at 2:33 intially and then you see her through most of the ending dancing on our left near Nelly. I’m so hurt! I hate being lied to….or rather deceived.
