Actress Kim Coles visits with Dr. Drew to navigate the age old debate of African American women and their hairstyles. Kim explains the history and culture of the accepted hair standards in her community. A panel of African American women also share their views on how and why they wear their hair the way they do. The panel will address everything from weaves to chemical processes to relaxers, iron pressed, natural wear and more. Today’s show uncovers the time, energy and money that it takes to maintain various looks.
In the second part of this hair debate, Dr. Drew dives into the emotions behind having “good hair” in the African American community. Drew will discuss this topic with African American men in the audience to get their point of view on women’s hair. Celebrity hairstylist Derek J from “Real Housewives of Atlanta” will then share his thoughts on the hair craze.
Coles has appeared on many television shows, including “Frasier,” “Six Feet Under,” “Celebrity Mole” and “The Geena Davis Show.” She is perhaps best known for her roles on three FOX series: first as an original cast member of the comedy series “In Living Color,” then as Synclaire James on the sitcom “Living Single,” and lastly as the mother of Spirit on “One on One.” Coles is a published author; her book is called “I’m Free But It Will Cost You.”
