The Green Eggs & Ham Hair Growth Smoothie

By Dr. Phoenyx Austin of DrPhoenyx.com

I love Dr. Seuss rhymes and I love my blender. They both bring me so much joy. So this post is about one of my Dr. Seuss inspired concoctions- The Green Eggs & Ham Smoothie.

But before we get to the recipe, let me tell you a bit about my blender. She (yes, I call hershe) is a true BFF. She’s been here for me through thick and thin- through many a hectic mornings and nights when I’ve been too rushed to cook a meal, let alone chew my food. She’s truly an enabler of healthy living for my busy lifestyle. She frequently removes the ever-present temptation to grab those yummy late-night, fast, fried, and not so nutritious meals. She also very low-maintenance and all she requires is that I grab a few fresh (or frozen) fruits and veggies, and let her work her magic.

Which brings me to one of her specialities- smoothies! I love smoothies and I believe they are a wonderful addition to any beauty regimen. In fact, I know many women that report significant improvement in hair growth (and even the glow of their skin) when they regularly drink smoothies containing these types of nutrients and foods:

Protein

Fruits/veggies that contain protein include: apples, avocados, bananas, blackberries, celery, blueberries, cherries, grapefruit, and green leafy vegetables

Omega Fatty Acids

Foods that are rich in omega fatty acids include: nuts, seeds (i.e. flaxseed), and green leafy vegetables

Vitamin A

Fruits/veggies that are rich in vitamin A include: apricots, carrots, cantaloupe, green leafy vegetables, spinach, and strawberries

B Vitamins (includes vitamins such as folic acid and biotin)

Fruits/veggies that are rich in B vitamins include: spinach, kale, green leafy vegetables, seeds, nuts, milk and dairy products

Vitamin E

Foods that are rich in vitamin E include: avocado, kiwi, guava, nectarines, raspberries, raw seeds and nuts, dried beans, and leafy green vegetables.

Those were just a few of the nutrients that support hair growth. There are also minerals, such as zinc and selenium that are essential as well. Check out my new haircare book for a comprehensive list of vitamins, minerals and supplements (i.e. MSM) that stimulate hair growth, as well as their recommended dosages and the foods that naturally contain them.

Now let’s move on to my Dr. Seuss inspired smoothie…

The Green Strawberry & Banana Smoothie aka The Green Eggs & Ham Smoothie

1 cup of coconut water (I like to use coconut water, but you can substitute with almond milk)
1 banana
1 cup of strawberries
1 cup/handful of kale
1 tablespoon of freshly ground flaxseed

Put all ingredients in a blender and mix thoroughly. You can also add ice to this mix before blending.

Overall I really like this smoothie because it’s a bit of a trick on the senses. You get the banana and strawberry flavor, with a bit of coconut, but the smoothie looks green (a Green Eggs and Ham green- or a “this doesn’t look like it would taste very yummy” green). But don’t be put off by the look. It definitely has a taste you wouldn’t expect. And just like theCat In The Hat, you too will be pleasantly surprised! You’ll love it here, You’ll love it there, You’ll love it everywhere! And it’s really good for your hair! Bon appétit!
