Curl Memoirs: Anissa

How long have you been natural and when did you BC?

I got my last relaxer in August of 2009 right before I started my second year of college. I did my big chop on June 23, 2010.

What are your staple products and hairstyles?

Aussie 3 Minute Miracle is my staple. I love the way it smells and it always leaves my hair feeling luscious. I love a good twist out. I twist with Shea Moisture Curl Enhancing Smoothie.

What is your regimen?
I co-wash a few times a week with Aussie Moist conditioner. Deep condition once a week with Aussie 3 Minute Miracle. I don’t detangle my hair very often, but when I do, I detangle in the shower with a big afro comb and then go through it from tip to root in sections with a paddle brush. I’m still on the search for a good leave-in.

What are your natural hair goals?

My goal is just to be happy with me the way God made me: mind, body, soul, skin and hair. I don’t really have any length goals because my hair was long when it was relaxed. Length isn’t a big deal to me.

How do you keep your hair intact overnight?

I retwist my twist outs at night. They usually last about 3 or 4 days before I feel like I need to wash again. No matter what style my hair is in, I sleep in a satin bonnet. I bought a silk pillowcase, but I don’t like the way it feels on my face.

How do you maintain length?

Stay away from heat. I’ve only blow dried my hair once and straightened it twice since going natural.

Name 1 reason you went natural and why you love being natural.

I didn’t have that big enlightenment moment that a lot of women have until after I was already natural. I wanted a change to my look, so I was either going to cut bangs or go natural. Going natural was a trend for me at first. It became a permanent decision for me when I saw some of the hate some of the black girls on my college campus had for those of us who decided to embrace our natural textures. I decided that the way God made me is perfect. It’s acceptable for every other race of women to wear their hair as it naturally grows out of their scalp, so I’ve decided that it’s acceptable for me too. I love being natural because of the versatility, the low amount maintenance and the confidence that came along with embracing the real me.
