Whatever your personal style, nothing complements curls more than a great cut. To make sure you always get the cut you want, follow Ouidad’s five rules for a perfect snip.
Rule #1: Interview your stylist
Before you commit, take the time to learn a little about your stylist, especially if it’s your first time with him or her. Ask to see examples of their work, and inquire about their approach to cutting curls and what special techniques they use. If you don’t feel comfortable with any of their responses, find another stylist. You can search for a Ouidad certified stylist here: www.ouidad.com/salon-locator.
Rule #2: Get a cut designed just for curls
Every curl is unique. Ouidad offers the Carve and Slice, the only trademarked technique for cutting curly hair. The Carve and Slice utilizes an angled cutting technique to remove bulk from the sides, preventing the all-too-common “pyramid look.” The technique enhances the hair’s natural curl pattern and creates defined ringlets that fit into each other like the pieces of a puzzle.
Rule #3: Curls are better cut when damp
The Carve and Slice is done on wet hair, allowing the stylist to better understand the client’s natural curl pattern and give the most effective cut. Ouidad experts agree that most curl patterns should be cut on an angle. Uneven layering works best, especially on tight curls. A short layer underneath a longer layer pumps up volume and prevents hair being flat at the crown.
Rule #4: Set up a trim schedule
We recommend scheduling a standing appointment with your stylist for regular trims. Doing so locks down a definitive plan to maintain your ends, preventing future knotting and split strands. On average, trim your curls every 6-8 weeks. (You’ll know it’s time for a trim when your curls begin to knot easily.)
Rule #5: For color-treated curls only: trim damage
These days, we’re lucky to have access to quality color that actually helps to seal the cuticle, add shine and enhance curl. Even so, curls can sometimes become sensitized from color, making them prone to moisture loss and split and frayed ends. Once your hair reaches this condition, a healthy cut is the only solution. For color-treated curls, we recommend scheduling a trim every 4-6 weeks to help prevent damage.
A note about the importance of trims
When your perfect ringlets start to look a bit “fuzzy,” it’s time for a trim. While the need to trim curly hair isn’t always immediately clear because split-ends aren’t so readily seen, ignoring this regular maintenance could make the difference between you keeping your desired length and having to have most of it cut off because your strands are beyond repair. Protect the overall health of your hair with a regularly scheduled snip.
